Full height car doors are suited for freight elevators authorized to carry passengers. Three section full height car doors are used when overhead height in the hoistway is extremely limited. A three-section full height car door consists of three counterweighted panels of equal heights and can be either manually or power operated.

Required overhead height, measured from the top landing sill to the nearest overhead obstruction, for full height three-section car doors equals 1.33 times the landing door opening height plus 267mm (10.5 in). Three-section full height car doors require a 216mm (8.5 in) car setback.
