Two section car doors/gates are used when overhead height in the hoistway is limited. A twosection car door/gate consists of two counterweighted panels of different heights and can be either manually or power operated.

Required overhead height, measured from the top landing sill to the nearest overhead obstruction, for a standard 1839mm (6 ft) high car door/gate is equal 1.5 times the landing door opening height plus 150mm (6 in). Two-section 1839 mm (6 ft) high car doors/gates require a 150mm (6 in) car setback.

When there is insufficient overhead for a two-section car door/gate, use a differential car door/gate.
