Freight elevator safety has improved dramatically over the years. Car gates have undergone numerous redesigns because they ride with the elevator platform and permit entrance into the car for freight and personnel. Car gates were initially furnished with a contact type reversing edge, these were replaced with a sensor beam, than a Light curtain and most recently an additional light curtain (dual curtains). Some car gates are built with the upper half traditional mesh and the lower half solid panel to protect it from damage, this design is a common solution in Retail applications. Other Car gate are full height and solid panel, this application is most often seen when the freight elevator is required to be totally enclosed. Safety labels are provided on freight elevators to communicate that the elevator doesn’t permit passengers, how properly operate a manual door, and other functions unique to a freight elevator with vertical slide doors. The Peelle Door Safety Device was deigned to arrest door travel in the event of a chain break usually caused by operator error. There are code considerations as well, the North American standard is ANSI; the European standard is EN81. Other markets accept either or as long as a standard is followed, i.e., Mexico, China, etc.
